Irish businesses must mobilise for smartphone revolution

6 December 2011

State-of-the-Net-issue-23Ireland now has at least three-quarters of a million smartphone owners, and businesses need to make mobile a core component of their marketing strategies, according to the latest internet trends published in State of the Net. The quarterly bulletin, published by AMAS, shows that around five million mobile apps have been downloaded in Ireland.

“It is increasingly likely that the first point of contact that potential customers have with your brand or company will be through the browsers on their smartphones,” says Aileen O’Toole, Managing Director, AMAS.

“Those who monitor the patterns of web traffic are noticing a major shift to mobile devices. For example, mobile’s share of traffic to RTÉ’s web services has jumped from 15% to 40% within the past year, and it’s only a matter of time before it has the majority share.”

Among other internet trends, State of the Net notes that the number of Facebook accounts in Ireland has passed the two million mark, while membership of LinkedIn has grown by 25% in the past six months to 591,000 Irish users.
