The ever-growing array of paid and free apps for iPhones and other mobile devices is the digital phenomenon of the year.
Apple’s App Store has over 100,000 apps available for download and all the evidence would show that Irish consumers are parting with their hard-earned cash for various useful, and useless, apps.
Hard numbers on actual downloads in Ireland are hard to come by. But a snapshot of what turns on the iPhone consumer can be gleaned from the top grossing apps listed on the iPhone store. The top 10 for mid-November, shown in the graphic, range in cost from €1.59 for an app to uncover the Eircom passwords to €79.99 for a driving navigational aid. The top ten are:

- dessid used for recovering Eircom wireless passwords
- Jamie’s 20 minute Meals – the Cockney chef on cooking in a hurry
- Wunder Radio allows users to listen to streaming radio and other content
- Tetris plays the much-loved video game
- Irish Independent offers news headlines and stories
- Championship Manager manages virtual football team
- TomTom UK & Ireland helps you navigate Irish and UK roads
- Sonic the Hedgehog is the iPhone version of the console favourite
- CoPilot Live UK & Ireland, another road navigation tool
- My Bill allows O2 bill-pay customers to access and pay bills
